About the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 PCB

HDD Synth Prototype MK4 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by MaverickUK, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-NC-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100.3 × 69.9 mm, with 40 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RASPBERRYPI_PICO2, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the MAX98357AETE+T and EL357N(C)(TA)-VG. By type, the board carries 9 capacitors, 8 resistors, 7 connectors, 4 diodes, 2 ICs and 2 inductors.

It belongs with the audio, retro computing and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Recreate the sound of mechanical spinning HDDs on retro PCs that use a solid state drive

Inspired by seeing the HDD Clicker project and wanting to more faithfully recreate the sound of old mechanical hard drives spinning up and accessing data. Because the hard drive sounds come from samples, it's possible to replace them with any hard drive recording you'd like or something completely different!

- Sample based recreation of mechanical hard disk drives operating sounds - Spin up when PC is turned on - Idle hum whilst standing by - Access clicks and crackcles - Spin down when PC is turned off - SD card to hold multiple HDD sample packs, to recreate the sound of different…

HDD Synth Prototype MK4: common questions

What microcontroller does the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 use?

The HDD Synth Prototype MK4 is built around the RASPBERRYPI_PICO2, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 PCB?

The HDD Synth Prototype MK4 measures 100.3 × 69.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the HDD Synth Prototype MK4?

40 components, from 33 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 design files?

From the MaverickUK/HDDSynth repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 design in my own project?

It is published under CC-BY-NC-4.0, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the HDD Synth Prototype MK4 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
