About the ColorMemo PCB

ColorMemo is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by michalpelka, published on GitHub under the Unlicense license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 160.8 × 105.5 mm, with 58 components from 13 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the WEMOS_D1_mini, from the ESP8266 family. By type, the board carries 24 switches, 13 diodes, 13 capacitors, 4 resistors, 1 IC and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the displays & leds and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Interactive toy-game for children with grid of RGB leds and buttons.

An open-source, handheld color memory game built around a WeMos D1 mini (ESP8266), a 3×4 push-button matrix, a 12‑pixel NeoPixel (WS2812) LED array, and a small buzzer. Power it up, memorize the brief color reveal, and then flip tiles two at a time to find matching pairs. Clear the board to win and enjoy the victory animation and melody.

Below are a few snapshots of the prototype and assembly. Images are stored in Photos/.

ColorMemo: common questions

What microcontroller does the ColorMemo use?

The ColorMemo is built around the WEMOS_D1_mini, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the ColorMemo PCB?

The ColorMemo measures 160.8 × 105.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ColorMemo?

58 components, from 13 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ColorMemo design files?

From the michalpelka/ColorMemo repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ColorMemo design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Unlicense license, which michalpelka chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the ColorMemo without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
