About the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor PCB

EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by nriaziat, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 29 × 71.8 mm, with 68 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the ADS1234IPW, TLV70245_SOT23-5, W25Q128JVS and NCP1117-3.3_SOT223. By type, the board carries 32 resistors, 19 capacitors, 5 ICs, 3 connectors, 3 jumpers and 2 crystals.

It belongs with the sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

An Open Source PCB for force sensing with EMI-resistant strain gauges.

For more information about this project, please refer to our publication: Riaziat, Naveed D., et al. "Investigating Haptic Feedback in Vision-Deficient Millirobot Telemanipulation." IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (2024). Designed for use with the Texas Measurment QMFLA-5-350-11-1LJAY-F and the RP2040. For maximum EMI resistance, we reccommend using twisted and shielded cabling as well as the included 3D printed housing with copper tape lining.

EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor: common questions

What microcontroller does the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor use?

The EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor PCB?

The EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor measures 29 × 71.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor?

68 components, from 28 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor design files?

From the nriaziat/EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor-PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which nriaziat chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the EMI-Hardened-Force-Sensor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
