About the Pathfound PCB

Pathfound is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by OJOkhiria, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 145.5 × 62.4 mm, with 16 components from 9 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the MAX7219. By type, the board carries 4 resistors, 3 switches, 3 diodes, 2 ICs, 2 LEDs and 2 capacitors.

From the project

A custom PCB controller board and efidget that counts the number of times you press a switch from 0-99 before resetting.

Specifically, pressing Button1 will turn on LED1 (the rightmost one) and increase the counter. If Button2 is pressed within 2 seconds of Button1, LED2 will light up; pressing Button2 also decrements the counter. Button3 turns on LED3 (leftmost LED), but it must be held for at least 800 milliseconds. This minimim hold time also applies to the reset for the counter to allow resetting to be a little more intentional. The controller outputs this counting data to the MAX7219, which uses two seven-segment displays: one for the ones digit, and one for the tens digit.

Pathfound: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pathfound use?

The Pathfound is built around the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Pathfound PCB?

The Pathfound measures 145.5 × 62.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pathfound?

16 components, from 9 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pathfound design files?

From the OJOkhiria/Pathfound repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pathfound design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which OJOkhiria chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Pathfound without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
