Resonant scanning is essential for high-speed and in vivo laser scanning microscopy. However, resonant scanners are susceptible to jitter due to a mismatch between the mirror's mechanical oscillation and the data acquisition system's pixel sampling clock. If the digitizer samples at a fixed rate, the pixels on one line land in slightly different positions than on the next and the raw data appears shifted from line to line.

PLL: common questions

What microcontroller does the PLL use?

The PLL is built around the ATSAMD21E18A-AFT, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the PLL PCB?

The PLL measures 74.8 × 44.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PLL?

73 components, from 26 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PLL design files?

From the OpenSiPM/PLL repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PLL design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with OpenSiPM. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the PLL without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
