About the Transponder-12.0.1 PCB

Transponder-12.0.1 is an open source STM32 PCB design by peterantypas, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 90.4 × 25 mm, with 115 components from 87 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32L412K8U6, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the LDFPVR, AP3211KTR-G1, L76-M33, PSA4-5043+ and DMN63D8LDW-7. By type, the board carries 39 capacitors, 19 test points, 16 resistors, 15 inductors, 13 ICs and 3 transistors.

From the project

MAIANA™ is the first Open Source AIS transponder. It proudly raises an extra long middle finger to the marine electronics industry, government overregulation and everything else that gets in the way of innovation in this space.

This directory contains Eagle CAD files as well as schematic PDFs and Gerber exports for board fabrication.

The board stackup is good enough for either OSH Park 4-layer, or JLCPCB 4-layer with controlled impedance (JLC2313).

Revision 11.5.2 does away with the (hard to source) regulator from ST and replaces it with a Zener + NPN combination that delivers about 8.5V to the PA under load.

Transponder-12.0.1: common questions

What microcontroller does the Transponder-12.0.1 use?

The Transponder-12.0.1 is built around the STM32L412K8U6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Transponder-12.0.1 PCB?

The Transponder-12.0.1 measures 90.4 × 25 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.604 mm thick.

How many components are on the Transponder-12.0.1?

115 components, from 87 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Transponder-12.0.1 design files?

From the peterantypas/maiana repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Transponder-12.0.1 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which peterantypas chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Transponder-12.0.1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
