About the Ferris PCB

Ferris is an open source STM32 PCB design by pierrechevalier83, published on GitHub under the SHL-2.1 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 208.8 × 86.8 mm, with 102 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA32U4-AU, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the MCP23017_SO, MCP1700T-3302E/TT and SRV05-4. By type, the board carries 37 diodes, 34 relays, 13 capacitors, 8 resistors, 4 ICs and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A low profile split keyboard designed to satisfy one single use case elegantly

The Ferris 0.2 mini is the tiniest Ferris in all dimensions: It uses choc mini switches, like the Ferris 0.1 Low to reduce the keyboard's depth. It uses choc spacing between keys, like the Ferris 0.1 and 0.2 compact. * It has no extra feature needing extra space.

Reminder that like for the Ferris 0.1 low, this keyboard uses uncommon and less readily available "choc mini" switches that can be acquired from Kailh's store on AliExpress: Listing for choc mini white (clicky) switches Listing for choc mini brown (tactile) and black (linear) switches

Ferris: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ferris use?

The Ferris is built around the ATMEGA32U4-AU, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Ferris PCB?

The Ferris measures 208.8 × 86.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ferris?

102 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ferris design files?

From the pierrechevalier83/ferris repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ferris design in my own project?

It is published under SHL-2.1, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Ferris without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
