About the Gameboy-Velo PCB
Gameboy-Velo is an open source ESP32 PCB design by RishitJain-dev, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 61.5 × 85.5 mm, with 6 components from 4 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the XIAO-ESP32-C3-SMD, from the ESP32 family. By type, the board carries 4 switches, 1 IC and 1 connector.
It belongs with the power & battery and retro computing designs in this gallery.
From the project
Gameboy Velo is a modern take on the classic Gameboy, with a joystick instead of a d-pad, and the same A and B buttons as before. This new version includes a large colourful TFT screen and included storage with an SD card reader and even a LiPo battery!
It is programmed in C++, using Arduino IDE to compile! The micro controller is the XIAO ESP32-C3.
Total price is around $70 including filament and PCB prices. Please note that prices fluctuate! Check the BOM.csv for more detailed financial information.
This project consists of 2 main parts, the PCB and CAD. The PCB was designed in KiCAD, while the CAD was made in Onshape. This project is fully open source for NON COMMERCIAL purposes.

Gameboy-Velo: common questions
What microcontroller does the Gameboy-Velo use?
The Gameboy-Velo is built around the XIAO-ESP32-C3-SMD, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Gameboy-Velo PCB?
The Gameboy-Velo measures 61.5 × 85.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Gameboy-Velo?
6 components, from 4 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Gameboy-Velo design files?
From the RishitJain-dev/Gameboy-Velo repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Gameboy-Velo design in my own project?
The repository has no license, so all rights stay with RishitJain-dev. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
Can I test firmware for the Gameboy-Velo without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
