About the Module board

Module board is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by roboryman, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 30 mm, with 29 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVSSIQ. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 5 connectors, 5 resistors, 2 ICs, 1 crystal and 1 diode.

From the project

A full-stack modular controller that is feature-rich, usable, responsive, and robust. Can be used for any HID-compliant purpose, but we focus on developing swappable modules that can form customizable gamepads.

A potential use case is general hardware level remapping for quality of life. Another is rapidly prototyping different controller layouts for games or simulations in development.

Our team consists of 5 members: - Yu-yang Hsieh - Britton McLeavy - Caleb O'Malley - Merrick Ryman - Evan Zhang

This project is developed in conjunction with the UF CpE Capstone program (Fall 2022 - Spring 2023). This project is self-funded. As such, donations are appreciated in this educational pursuit (hardware is not cheap nowadays).

Module board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Module board use?

The Module board is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Module board?

The Module board measures 30 × 30 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Module board?

29 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Module board design files?

From the roboryman/prototroller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Module board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which roboryman chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Module board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
