About the KiCAD project PCB

KiCAD project is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by samanbeer, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 78.4 × 86.3 mm, with 34 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the 74AHCT125. By type, the board carries 16 diodes, 10 switches, 6 capacitors and 2 ICs.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

I have done PCB design before, but I wanted to do something more hard like adding MCU, RGB LEDs, and a matrix connection. I learned key matrix wiring with diodes, level-shifting logic with the 74AHCT125 processor, PCB routing around an MCU and KiCad in general. Also I learned a lot from MarkDown syntax. I will use this for switching apps, custom scripts in some apps like VsCode for pushing new code to github etc... The…

KiCAD project: common questions

What microcontroller does the KiCAD project use?

The KiCAD project is built around the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the KiCAD project PCB?

The KiCAD project measures 78.4 × 86.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the KiCAD project?

34 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the KiCAD project design files?

From the samanbeer/macropad_stasis repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the KiCAD project design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with samanbeer. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the KiCAD project without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
