The Armadillo: Custom Arduino-compatible ATmega328P stepper motor controller PCB with Trinamic TMC2209 silent driver and single-wire UART

The Armadillo is an open-source, Arduino-compatible motion control PCB designed from first principles in KiCad 10.0.1. It pairs the reliable Microchip ATmega328P 8-bit AVR microcontroller with the high-performance Trinamic TMC2209-LA silent bipolar stepper motor driver on a rugged $60.0\text{ mm} \times 60.0\text{ mm}$ 2-layer FR-4 board.

Featuring an onboard WCH CH340K USB-to-UART converter with automated DTR auto-reset, The Armadillo provides seamless plug-and-play programming directly through the Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, or AVR-GCC toolchains. Key features include silent stepper motion…

The-Armadillo: common questions

What microcontroller does the The-Armadillo use?

The The-Armadillo is built around the ATmega328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the The-Armadillo PCB?

The The-Armadillo measures 60 × 60 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the The-Armadillo?

49 components, from 25 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the The-Armadillo design files?

From the sbbxiii/The-Armadillo repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the The-Armadillo design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which sbbxiii chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the The-Armadillo without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
