About the TapeDispenser PCB

TapeDispenser is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by stephenjdc, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 30 mm, with 13 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-12E, from the ESP8266 family. By type, the board carries 5 resistors, 3 diodes, 2 connectors, 1 IC, 1 transistor and 1 speaker.

If you'd like to build your own tape dispenser, which tells you how much you've used, and blesses you afterwards, you have two choices.

1. Leave out a pencil and paper one night before bed, and hope that by the morning God will have written down the instructions. 2. Clone this repo, buy the required parts, a 3D printer, and get to work. Here's an assembly tutorial.

TapeDispenser: common questions

What microcontroller does the TapeDispenser use?

The TapeDispenser is built around the ESP-12E, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the TapeDispenser PCB?

The TapeDispenser measures 50 × 30 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the TapeDispenser?

13 components, from 11 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the TapeDispenser design files?

From the stephenjdc/TapeDispenser repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the TapeDispenser design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with stephenjdc. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the TapeDispenser without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
