About the Shield kb1

Shield kb1 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by tangybbq, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 65.5 × 53 mm, with 18 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_UNO_R3, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 7 diodes, 4 switches, 3 connectors, 3 resistors and 1 module.

It belongs with the keyboards, power & battery and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

Design files for my keyboards

This repo captures the design files associated with my custom keyboards.

These keyboards are primarily focused on Steno input, mainly using Plover. In the spirit of open steno, I have made these designs open. Anyone is free to make designs based on these keyboards, for non-commercial purposes. I am releasing the designs under the CC BY-NC 3.0 license. Specifically, this means if you wish to sell a product based on the design, you should talk to me.

Shield kb1: common questions

What microcontroller does the Shield kb1 use?

The Shield kb1 is built around the Arduino_UNO_R3, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Shield kb1?

The Shield kb1 measures 65.5 × 53 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Shield kb1?

18 components, from 12 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Shield kb1 design files?

From the tangybbq/keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Shield kb1 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with tangybbq. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Shield kb1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
