About the Spectrum analyzer PCB

Spectrum analyzer is an open source PCB design by thaumatichthys, published on GitHub. It is a 6-layer board measuring 200 × 100 mm, with 316 components from 99 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the MTX2-143+, AVA-183A+, SIM-24MH+, DAT-31A-PP+ and GALI-39. By type, the board carries 152 capacitors, 90 resistors, 25 inductors, 20 ICs, 10 connectors and 4 jumpers.

It belongs with the test & measurement designs in this gallery.

I should say that this is my first real RF design (probably not the best first project, but whatever).

This is the schematic. (Not posted directly cuz its like 9 pages)

This is meant to be the RF section of a spectrum analyzer. The idea was to convert a 10 kHz to 5 GHz input signal up to an IF of around 7800 MHz, then pass it through an external cavity bandpass filter of around 40 MHz bandwidth, then downconvert it to an IF of 915 MHz, and then further down to around 79 MHz, filtered to 10 MHz bandwidth. Then, on a different PCB, this would get aliased to baseband via something like an…

Spectrum analyzer: common questions

How big is the Spectrum analyzer PCB?

The Spectrum analyzer measures 200 × 100 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.5448 mm thick.

How many components are on the Spectrum analyzer?

316 components, from 99 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Spectrum analyzer design files?

From the thaumatichthys/spectrum-analyzer repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Spectrum analyzer design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with thaumatichthys. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
