About the Astra v2 PCB

Astra v2 is an open source STM32 PCB design by TheScientist101, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-NC-4.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 35 × 32.4 mm, with 41 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32H750VBTX, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the NRF24L01_BREAKOUT and W25Q128JVS. By type, the board carries 15 resistors, 12 capacitors, 4 transistors, 4 diodes, 3 ICs and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the robotics & motion and sensors designs in this gallery, and the repository also holds 1 earlier revision of it.

From the project

An open source, low cost, extensible brushed drone.

Astra is an ~80mm brushed quadcopter. It it powered off of a single 1s Li-Po (4.2V), and uses four brushed motors.

Astra supports an optional FPV module, and includes a HAT-style pin interface on the flight controller.

We've also designed our own transmitter for Astra. The flight controller and transmitter use an nRF24 to communicate with low latency.

Every part of Astra was designed from scratch - the flight controller, the transmitter, and the frame.

Astra v2: common questions

What microcontroller does the Astra v2 use?

The Astra v2 is built around the STM32H750VBTX, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Astra v2 PCB?

The Astra v2 measures 35 × 32.4 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Astra v2?

41 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Astra v2 design files?

From the TheScientist101/astra repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Astra v2 design in my own project?

It is published under CC-BY-NC-4.0, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Astra v2 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
