About the VideoFrame PCB

VideoFrame is an open source STM32 PCB design by ts-manuel, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 80 × 50 mm, with 103 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F405RGT6, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the MP2451DT, SY6280A, HT7533-1 and USBLC6-2SC6. By type, the board carries 49 resistors, 31 capacitors, 6 ICs, 6 connectors, 4 diodes and 2 crystals.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

The slowest video player with 7-Colors

e-Paper displays maintain the displayed image without needing any power. The image is updated every 24 minutes and an update cycle takes 18 seconds. Since the device is in sleep mode for the majority of the time, power draw is minimal and the batteries last for a decent amount of time.

The device is powered by 6 AA batteries.

VideoFrame: common questions

What microcontroller does the VideoFrame use?

The VideoFrame is built around the STM32F405RGT6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the VideoFrame PCB?

The VideoFrame measures 80 × 50 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the VideoFrame?

103 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the VideoFrame design files?

From the ts-manuel/VideoFrame repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the VideoFrame design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which ts-manuel chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the VideoFrame without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
