About the Hackpack v4-hardware PCB

Hackpack v4-hardware is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by twilio, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 93.5 × 149.9 mm, with 40 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Raspberry_Pi_Zero_W Header, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the WS2812B, MCP3008, ILI9341_28_TFT_LCD_TOUCH and PSP_1000_JSTK. By type, the board carries 11 resistors, 8 ICs, 8 capacitors, 7 switches, 3 connectors and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the wearables designs in this gallery.

Everything you need to build a badge PCB can be found in the KiCad folder. The Hackpack v4 was designed using KiCad major version 5. Download a copy here.

You'll also need to purchase a Raspberry Pi Zero W and a 8GB or larger MicroSD card to use the board.

You can find pre-generated Gerbers in the KiCad/Gerbers directory. Use them at your PCB house of choice to manufacture a board.

Hackpack v4-hardware: common questions

What microcontroller does the Hackpack v4-hardware use?

The Hackpack v4-hardware is built around the Raspberry_Pi_Zero_W Header, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Hackpack v4-hardware PCB?

The Hackpack v4-hardware measures 93.5 × 149.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Hackpack v4-hardware?

40 components, from 22 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Hackpack v4-hardware design files?

From the twilio/hackpack-v4-hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Hackpack v4-hardware design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which twilio chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Hackpack v4-hardware without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
