Newest iteration of PurpleDrop. Reimplemented in kicad5

This holds the main board electronics design for PurpleDrop, a digital microfluidic device. The design is done in KiCad v5.x.

PurpleDrop is open-source, and you are welcome to build it as-is, or use it as a starting point for your own projects. If you are thinking about building your own PurpleDrop, you are encouraged to reach out first. This project is under active development, and there may be some recent updates or issues not yet reflected here that you should consider. This repository is maintained by Jeff McBride, who can be reached at mcbridej@cs.washington.edu.

Purpledrop: common questions

What microcontroller does the Purpledrop use?

The Purpledrop is built around the ATSAMG55J19A-AU, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Purpledrop PCB?

The Purpledrop measures 161 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Purpledrop?

253 components, from 82 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Purpledrop design files?

From the uwmisl/purpledrop repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Purpledrop design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which uwmisl chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Purpledrop without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
