About the VolksEEG PCB

VolksEEG is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by VolksEEG, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 121.2 × 165.5 mm, with 143 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the nRF52840-Feather-Sense-Board, from the Nordic nRF family. Other key parts include the ADUM240E1BRIZ-RL, MEJ1S0305SC, LP3990MF-3.3, ADP7182ACPZ-2.5-R7 and TPS78425Q. By type, the board carries 55 capacitors, 36 resistors, 31 test points, 9 ICs, 5 connectors and 4 inductors.

From the project

Open Source EEG project

The VolksEEG project is creating an open-source electroencephalogram (EEG) machine, fully-functional for clinical or research use.*

The final device will obtain clearance by the USA FDA, and CE marking (the equivalent of FDA clearance in the EU).*

Currently, no other open-source electronic medical device (that we know of) has full regulatory clearance*

All hardware and software designs will be freely available (free as in speech and as in beer).*

VolksEEG: common questions

What microcontroller does the VolksEEG use?

The VolksEEG is built around the nRF52840-Feather-Sense-Board, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the VolksEEG PCB?

The VolksEEG measures 121.2 × 165.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the VolksEEG?

143 components, from 33 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the VolksEEG design files?

From the VolksEEG/VolksEEG repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the VolksEEG design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which VolksEEG chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the VolksEEG without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
