About the ESP-12F Breakout

ESP-12F Breakout is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by vul-os, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 25.4 × 25.4 mm, with 4 components from 3 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family.

It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts, sensors and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open hardware: 107 KiCad PCB designs — SMD-to-THT breakout adapters, ATTiny/ATMega/ESP development boards, and a 39-part sensor line on a common JST-SH connector.

The mark in brand/ is the source of truth. Every icon this repo ships — favicon, PWA and app icons, the mark in the README and on the site — is rendered from brand/logo.svg rather than redrawn, so there is one approved drawing and no second copy to drift.

Copy it outward, never edit a derived copy, and never edit brand/ to match something downstream.

Most interesting silicon ships in a package that will not sit on a breadboard. SirBoard answers that in three layers: bare adapters you solder the part onto yourself, modules with the part already placed and supported, and development boards…

ESP-12F Breakout: common questions

What microcontroller does the ESP-12F Breakout use?

The ESP-12F Breakout is built around the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the ESP-12F Breakout?

The ESP-12F Breakout measures 25.4 × 25.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ESP-12F Breakout?

4 components, from 3 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ESP-12F Breakout design files?

From the vul-os/sirboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ESP-12F Breakout design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which vul-os chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the ESP-12F Breakout without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
