The SG-SGMB (SpiderGwen MotherBoard) is the embedded controller board at the heart of the SpiderGwen hexapod. It handles all real-time motor control and sensor interfacing, offloading these low-latency tasks from the Raspberry Pi brain. It physically stacks onto the Raspberry Pi via the 40-pin GPIO header and communicates over SPI0.

Power is supplied externally by the SG-SGPB (SpiderGwen Power Board), which converts the 2S LiPo battery voltage into the servo and logic rails used by this board.

SG-SGMB: common questions

What microcontroller does the SG-SGMB use?

The SG-SGMB is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the SG-SGMB PCB?

The SG-SGMB measures 56 × 85 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SG-SGMB?

64 components, from 35 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SG-SGMB design files?

From the WAAAJIAN/SG-SGMB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SG-SGMB design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with WAAAJIAN. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the SG-SGMB without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
