About the Wlfkbd PCB

Wlfkbd is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by WillACosta, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 289.7 × 109.3 mm, with 198 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-NRF52840-SMD, from the Nordic nRF family. By type, the board carries 88 diodes, 50 resistors, 40 switches, 8 capacitors, 4 transistors and 2 ICs.

It belongs with the keyboards and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

The WLF is a 40-key split keyboard (20 keys per half) with a column-staggered matrix and a splayed thumb cluster.

The WᛝLF Keyboard, or simply wlfkbd, is a 40-key keyboard featuring only 2 outer-pinky keys to improve ergonomics. This keyboard takes inspiration from well-known open-source keyboards such as "Corne", "Klor", and "Delta/Omega".

- Wireless BLE (XIAO nRF52840). - Ultra-low-profile build (=700mAh). - Minimalist and industrial design. - Aluminum case. - MX-Spacing. - White backlight. - RGB Status LEDs.

Wlfkbd: common questions

What microcontroller does the Wlfkbd use?

The Wlfkbd is built around the XIAO-NRF52840-SMD, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the Wlfkbd PCB?

The Wlfkbd measures 289.7 × 109.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.3 mm thick.

How many components are on the Wlfkbd?

198 components, from 29 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Wlfkbd design files?

From the WillACosta/wlfkbd repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Wlfkbd design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which WillACosta chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Wlfkbd without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
