About the Air filter controller PCB

Air filter controller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ademuri, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 41 × 149 mm, with 162 components from 41 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N4, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MT2492, AMS1117-3.3 and HC-1.0-4PLT. By type, the board carries 53 resistors, 45 diodes, 33 capacitors, 17 connectors, 4 ICs and 4 switches.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

The ESP32-S3 uses 3.3V. I want onboard indicator LEDs, and the option to have offboard LEDs as well. Using addressable WS2812-type LEDs is flexible. These need a 5V supply. The fans draw 12V, so this necessitates two voltage regulators.

The ESP32-S3 uses 3.3V. I want onboard indicator LEDs, and the option to have offboard LEDs as well. Using addressable WS2812-type LEDs is flexible. These need a 5V supply. The fans draw 12V, so this necessitates two voltage regulators.

One option would be to use separate buck converters for both the 5V and 3.3V rails.

With no offboard LEDs, the 5V rail power draw will be low. WS2812B LEDs consume roughly 1mA each when idle. When lit at a fully-saturated color, they will consume about 20mA each. There are four onboard LEDs, so this means 4mA idle, and 80mA when lit.

Air filter controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Air filter controller use?

The Air filter controller is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N4, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Air filter controller PCB?

The Air filter controller measures 41 × 149 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Air filter controller?

162 components, from 41 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Air filter controller design files?

From the ademuri/air-filter-controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Air filter controller design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with ademuri. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Air filter controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
