💎 DIY soldering iron controller

Gem Solder is an STM32-powered soldering iron controller for general-purpose C245 tips. It runs from a PD-compatible USB-C power source or from a DC power source of up to 24V, including 3S–6S battery packs. USB-C power delivery negotiates up to 20V.

The user interface features a 128×32 OLED display and two buttons. An RGB status LED gives visual feedback on the current operating mode.

Gem solder: common questions

What microcontroller does the Gem solder use?

The Gem solder is built around the STM32F103C8T6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Gem solder PCB?

The Gem solder measures 34 × 96 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Gem solder?

96 components, from 45 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Gem solder design files?

From the arlenko/gem-solder repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Gem solder design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which arlenko chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Gem solder without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
