About the Energy monitor PCB

Energy monitor is an open source ESP32 PCB design by basel19982323-ux, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 60 × 38 mm, with 23 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the INA226 and AP2112K-3.3. By type, the board carries 9 resistors, 6 capacitors, 3 ICs, 3 connectors and 2 switches.

It belongs with the power & battery and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

ESP32-C3 + INA226 solar panel energy monitor - 2-layer PCB designed in KiCad 10

A 2-layer, 60 × 38 mm board that measures the voltage, current and power of a 50 W / 12 V solar panel and reports them over Wi-Fi.

The panel's current flows through the board, from J2 (Solar IN) to J3 (Load OUT), through a small 20 mΩ shunt resistor. The board works in five steps:

1. Feed: 5 V comes in through USB-C (J1). R1/R2 (5.1 kΩ on CC1/CC2) tell the USB source that this is a 5 V sink. 2. Clean: an AP2112K-3.3 LDO regulator (U2) makes a steady 3.3 V supply. 3. Measure: an INA226 (U1) measures the panel voltage and the current through the 20 mΩ shunt (R3). 4. Think: an…

Energy monitor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Energy monitor use?

The Energy monitor is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Energy monitor PCB?

The Energy monitor measures 60 × 38 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Energy monitor?

23 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Energy monitor design files?

From the basel19982323-ux/energy-monitor-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Energy monitor design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which basel19982323-ux chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Energy monitor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
