About the XUM-1541 PCB

XUM-1541 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Beaupre-Circuit-Design, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 60 × 60 mm, with 15 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Pro_Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 74LS06. By type, the board carries 7 resistors, 2 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 diodes, 1 switch and 1 capacitor.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

An OpenCBM compatible interface for the 1541 disk drive that can be used to backup and restore floppies.

An OpenCBM compatible interface for the 1541 disk drive that can be used to backup and restore floppies.

Component selection isn't terribly critical, whathever you have in hand that fit the values will probably work just fine. Values for the led resistors will drive them at around 18ma which may be quite bright, increase the values if it's the case. R1 to R5 can be anything between 1KΩ and 100KΩ. The decoupling capacitor C1 should be at least 10v or more.

XUM-1541: common questions

What microcontroller does the XUM-1541 use?

The XUM-1541 is built around the Arduino_Pro_Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the XUM-1541 PCB?

The XUM-1541 measures 60 × 60 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the XUM-1541?

15 components, from 11 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the XUM-1541 design files?

From the Beaupre-Circuit-Design/c64-xum1541 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the XUM-1541 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Beaupre-Circuit-Design chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the XUM-1541 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
