From the project

A HiFi audio mod for various Game Boy models

A Bluetooth audio upgrade for the Game Boy Advance. It removes the console's stock audio amp and replaces the whole audio back end with an ESP32 and an ES8388 codec. The mod streams game audio to Bluetooth headphones and speakers, and it also drives the GBA's built-in speaker and wired headphone jack itself, with onboard EQ, volume, and sound effects.

- Bluetooth (A2DP) output to any standard headphones or speaker. - Wired headphones and the internal speaker, driven by the onboard codec. - EQ, volume, and sound-effect cues, tunable from a phone or laptop over Bluetooth (no app install, it…

AGB HiFi Audio Mod: common questions

What microcontroller does the AGB HiFi Audio Mod use?

The AGB HiFi Audio Mod is built around the ESP32-PICO-MINI-02-N8R2, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the AGB HiFi Audio Mod PCB?

The AGB HiFi Audio Mod measures 25.4 × 35.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the AGB HiFi Audio Mod?

60 components, from 26 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the AGB HiFi Audio Mod design files?

From the cajunpanda/gameboy-hifi-audio repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the AGB HiFi Audio Mod design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which cajunpanda chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the AGB HiFi Audio Mod without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
