About the Mad RP2040 PCB

Mad RP2040 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Cimos, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 77.2 × 86.4 mm, with 102 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the SC0914(13), from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the ECMF02-2AMX6, NCP1117LPST33T3G and W25Q128JVSIQ. By type, the board carries 38 diodes, 22 capacitors, 17 switches, 14 resistors, 4 ICs and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Test RP2040 board for a larger keyboard project

A small RP2040-based keypad PCB. Originally a minimal 2-key board to build confidence with the RP2040 ahead of a full-size keyboard, it has since grown into a 4x4 "anything" keypad with a rotary encoder and per-key RGB.

Status: Rev B (4x4) — fabricated November 2025; controller, USB and SK6812MINI-E chain verified, but a matrix wiring error past row 1 / col 1 needs cut-and-bodge to fix on existing units. The fix is not yet in main, so fabbing from main today reproduces the same bodge. Rev A (2-key) was fabricated and tested; archived under resources/reva/`.

Mad RP2040: common questions

What microcontroller does the Mad RP2040 use?

The Mad RP2040 is built around the SC0914(13), from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Mad RP2040 PCB?

The Mad RP2040 measures 77.2 × 86.4 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.2 mm thick.

How many components are on the Mad RP2040?

102 components, from 25 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Mad RP2040 design files?

From the Cimos/Mad_RP2040 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Mad RP2040 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Cimos chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Mad RP2040 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
