About the Iot sensor node PCB

Iot sensor node is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by DestinyU7, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 68.6 × 53.3 mm, with 19 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP8266-01_ESP-01, from the ESP8266 family. By type, the board carries 8 resistors, 5 connectors, 3 capacitors, 2 diodes and 1 IC.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, sensors and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

Custom PCB sensor node using ESP8266, KiCad, MQTT/Wi-Fi telemetry, and cloud dashboard data reporting.

A two-layer PCB designed from scratch in KiCad, fabricated at JLCPCB, hand-assembled, and running firmware that publishes live temperature telemetry to a cloud dashboard over Wi-Fi.

University of Delaware coursework: ELEG 298, ECE Design Challenges (Spring 2025). My first board taken end to end — schematic capture through layout, design rule check, Gerber generation, fabrication order, assembly, and bring-up.

Iot sensor node: common questions

What microcontroller does the Iot sensor node use?

The Iot sensor node is built around the ESP8266-01_ESP-01, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the Iot sensor node PCB?

The Iot sensor node measures 68.6 × 53.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Iot sensor node?

19 components, from 12 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Iot sensor node design files?

From the DestinyU7/iot-sensor-node-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Iot sensor node design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with DestinyU7. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Iot sensor node without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
