About the OpenTNC-Pico PCB

OpenTNC-Pico is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by devzendo, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 99.1 × 99.1 mm, with 38 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the LP2950-3.3 and 4N32. By type, the board carries 13 resistors, 8 capacitors, 6 diodes, 4 inductors, 3 ICs and 1 module.

From the project

A clone of David Platt AE6EO's OpenTNC, with M0CUV modifications.

First board manufactured. Two usable prototypes built.

Found one error in the Gerbers - an open trace in the RX-audio line, between the radio connectors and the ferrite bead. The "Round traces" KiCAD script I'd used mis-handled the trace junction for some reason, and (my bad!) I failed to run the design-rules check after rounding the traces. Won't make that mistake again any time soon. One blue-wire fix for this error is required to make the 0.3 board usable.

OpenTNC-Pico: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenTNC-Pico use?

The OpenTNC-Pico is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the OpenTNC-Pico PCB?

The OpenTNC-Pico measures 99.1 × 99.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenTNC-Pico?

38 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenTNC-Pico design files?

From the devzendo/OpenTNC repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenTNC-Pico design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which devzendo chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the OpenTNC-Pico without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
