ESP32-S3 running ESPHome on a custom KiCad PCB for the base of a SEVERIN WK 3479 water kettle

Replacement electronics for the base of a SEVERIN WK 3479 water kettle: an ESP32-S3 running ESPHome on a custom KiCad PCB. It adds precise target temperatures, a keep-warm mode and full Home Assistant integration — and keeps working completely standalone when Wi-Fi or Home Assistant are down.

Check that the fuse in the design is the correct one. Add an inrush current limiting resistor before the capacitor. (The built prototype has one retrofitted with wires, but the PCB design still needs to be changed accordingly.) * Add a capacitor relief (discharge) resistor if the power supply does not…

Water kettle: common questions

What microcontroller does the Water kettle use?

The Water kettle is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8R2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Water kettle PCB?

The Water kettle measures 59.8 × 127.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Water kettle?

53 components, from 28 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Water kettle design files?

From the dmatscheko/water_kettle repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Water kettle design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dmatscheko. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Water kettle without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
