About the Ay module

Ay module is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dnewcome, published on GitHub. It is a board, with 34 components from 23 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the AY-3-8910, 6N137, TL072 and LM7805. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 6 capacitors, 5 ICs, 5 connectors and 4 diodes.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

Modular synth oscillator using AY sound chips

A Eurorack synthesizer module built around the General Instrument AY-3-8910 programmable sound generator (PSG). The module provides 3 voices controlled via MIDI or CV/Gate, housed in a ~14HP 3U Eurorack panel.

Build a working KiCad schematic and PCB for a Eurorack-compatible AY-3-8910 module with:

- Single AY-3-8910 (40-pin DIP) — 3 simultaneous oscillator voices - MIDI input — 3.5mm TRS Type A with optoisolator, all channels, polyphonic - CV/Gate input — 1V/oct bipolar CV (±10V), 5V gate with input protection - Mono audio output — summed voices, line level, DC-blocked - Arduino Pro Micro…

Ay module: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ay module use?

The Ay module is built around the Arduino_ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How many components are on the Ay module?

34 components, from 23 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ay module design files?

From the dnewcome/ay-module repository on GitHub, which has the schematic and a netlist; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ay module design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dnewcome. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Ay module without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
