About the Picotonewheel PCB

Picotonewheel is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by edwindertien, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 20.4 × 51.2 mm, with 15 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the HCPL-0631-500E. By type, the board carries 7 resistors, 3 connectors, 2 capacitors, 1 IC, 1 module and 1 fuse.

It belongs with the audio and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Pico sources for a minimalistic tonewheel organ

A Hammond-style tonewheel organ sound module built on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 (RP2350): nine-drawbar polyphonic tonewheel synthesis, percussion and key click, and an effects chain with overdrive, vibrato, chorus and a stereo Leslie rotary-speaker simulation. It plays from a home-built keyboard unit, from any USB MIDI controller plugged into its USB-A host socket, or from a computer. A small colour LCD shows the drawbars and effect settings.

Picotonewheel: common questions

What microcontroller does the Picotonewheel use?

The Picotonewheel is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Picotonewheel PCB?

The Picotonewheel measures 20.4 × 51.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Picotonewheel?

15 components, from 11 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Picotonewheel design files?

From the edwindertien/picotonewheel repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Picotonewheel design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with edwindertien. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Picotonewheel without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
