About the SparkAltBatteryBoard PCB

SparkAltBatteryBoard is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by fahreddinaykut, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 58.8 × 29 mm, with 37 components from 23 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the INA199XXDCK, AP63203WU and TPD2E2U06DCK. By type, the board carries 13 capacitors, 11 resistors, 4 ICs, 4 connectors, 2 diodes and 2 inductors.

It belongs with the power & battery, test & measurement and robotics & motion designs in this gallery.

From the project

A custom research-oriented battery interface and telemetry board for the DJI Spark platform, built around a standard 3S LiPo battery pack instead of the discontinued, hard-to-find OEM Smart Battery.

A custom research-oriented battery interface and telemetry board for the DJI Spark platform, built around a standard 3S LiPo battery pack instead of the discontinued, hard-to-find OEM Smart Battery.

This project documents a reverse-engineered I2C/SMBus smart-battery communication interface, originally developed to study how the DJI Spark flight controller communicates with its battery pack. The board sits between a standard 3S pack and the drone, reads the real cell voltages and current, and reproduces that communication interface.

SparkAltBatteryBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the SparkAltBatteryBoard use?

The SparkAltBatteryBoard is built around the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the SparkAltBatteryBoard PCB?

The SparkAltBatteryBoard measures 58.8 × 29 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SparkAltBatteryBoard?

37 components, from 23 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SparkAltBatteryBoard design files?

From the fahreddinaykut/SparkAltBatteryBoard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SparkAltBatteryBoard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which fahreddinaykut chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SparkAltBatteryBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
