About the Live caption badge PCB

Live caption badge is an open source ESP32 PCB design by fakefred, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 170 × 105.1 mm, with 109 components from 38 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the HE9073A33M5R, ES7210, ES8311 and IS31AP2005. By type, the board carries 48 capacitors, 19 resistors, 17 test points, 6 ICs, 6 switches and 4 connectors.

It belongs with the wearables, audio and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

EECS 473 Project

The Live Caption Badge is my team's capstone project for EECS 473, from September to December 2024. It is a device that transmits and transcribes speech in a noisy environment in real-time for the hard of hearing.

For technical details, please read our report (10.6 MiB).

- ESP32 with ESP-IDF and ESP-ADF - FreeRTOS - Audio streaming over HTTP - Peer discovery over BLE - Real-time speech-to-text with Vosk - E-Paper over SPI - Audio over I2S

Live caption badge: common questions

What microcontroller does the Live caption badge use?

The Live caption badge is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Live caption badge PCB?

The Live caption badge measures 170 × 105.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Live caption badge?

109 components, from 38 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Live caption badge design files?

From the fakefred/live-caption-badge repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Live caption badge design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with fakefred. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Live caption badge without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
