About the Universal can board

Universal can board is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by franc0r, published on GitHub under the BSD-3-Clause license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 49.3 × 59.4 mm, with 77 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the FT232RL, LM1117-3.3, MCP2515-I/ST and MCP2551-I/SN. By type, the board carries 26 capacitors, 24 resistors, 14 diodes, 5 ICs, 5 connectors and 2 crystals.

It belongs with the sensors and robotics & motion designs in this gallery, and the repository also holds 1 earlier revision of it.

From the project

Contains schematic, pcb layout and software of the francor's universal can board.

The board communicates via CAN interface. The used µC is a AVR from the Arduino Nano v2. Future more this board is based on an Arduino, so the Arduino IDE can be used to programm the board.

Input An analog to measure current voltage of the motor controller. An analog to measure current current of the motor controller. Three digital to get the hall sensors of the hub motor wheels. An digital to get the speed ticks from the motor controller. Output An PWM to set the motor power. An digital to set the rotation direction. An digital to enable/disable the break. An digital to enable/disable the…

Universal can board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Universal can board use?

The Universal can board is built around the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Universal can board?

The Universal can board measures 49.3 × 59.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Universal can board?

77 components, from 24 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Universal can board design files?

From the franc0r/universal_can_board repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Universal can board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its BSD-3-Clause license, which franc0r chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Universal can board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
