About the Mem esp PCB

Mem esp is an open source ESP32 PCB design by fread, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 134.6 × 49.5 mm, with 70 components from 13 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-DevKitC, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the BA7806CP-E2, LTV-247 and DRV8908. By type, the board carries 41 resistors, 12 capacitors, 9 ICs and 8 connectors.

From the project

A very simple modular relay computer

This project contains plans for PCB modules to build a relay processor, complete with assembler and emulator. While the actual processor is made out of relays (and the occasional diode), memory is emulated by ESP-based boards. Their firmware also provides for loading programs and monitoring memory contents via a USB-TTY connection.

Processors are, fundamentally, not that complicated. At any rate, you can build one out of much less than the billions of transistors required for a desktop CPU. And it's a worthwhile endeavour, too, being actually able to understand a whole processor, albeit a…

Mem esp: common questions

What microcontroller does the Mem esp use?

The Mem esp is built around the ESP32-S3-DevKitC, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Mem esp PCB?

The Mem esp measures 134.6 × 49.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 2.1458 mm thick.

How many components are on the Mem esp?

70 components, from 13 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Mem esp design files?

From the fread/visvitalis repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Mem esp design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with fread. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Mem esp without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
