About the Pico-Dev iCE PCB

Pico-Dev iCE is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by frohro, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 293 components from 93 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_or_Pico_W_2_or_2W_or_YD-RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the 74LVC1G3157GW, TPH2501-TR, MS9280, MS9708 and ICE40UP5K-SG48I. By type, the board carries 106 capacitors, 88 resistors, 24 ICs, 18 test points, 10 connectors and 9 transistors.

It belongs with the rf & radio and audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

This is a direct down conversion (DDC) HF transceiver & VNA using the Raspberry Pi Pico and the iCE40UP5K.

Designed specifically as an educational platform, it abandons "black box" RF chips in favor of discrete, observable analog blocks. Students can physically probe the RF signal path, design their own LC filters on pluggable sandboxes, and write Verilog to perform Digital Down Conversion (DDC), digital decimation, and hardware I2S audio routing.

Level Shifters (Logic Inversion): The 4.5V analog switches are controlled by 3.3V GPIOs via 2N7002 N-Channel MOSFETs. Note: This results in a logic inversion. Writing 0 to the pin = Switch HIGH (Max Gain / Default Path). Writing 1 = Switch LOW…

Pico-Dev iCE: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pico-Dev iCE use?

The Pico-Dev iCE is built around the RaspberryPi_or_Pico_W_2_or_2W_or_YD-RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Pico-Dev iCE PCB?

The Pico-Dev iCE measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pico-Dev iCE?

293 components, from 93 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pico-Dev iCE design files?

From the frohro/pico-dev-ice repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pico-Dev iCE design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with frohro. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pico-Dev iCE without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
