About the Basic emulator PCB

Basic emulator is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by FromDarkHell, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 47 × 61.7 mm, with 19 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family. By type, the board carries 8 capacitors, 7 diodes, 2 resistors, 1 module and 1 switch.

From the project

A complete reimplementation of the LEGO Dimensions toypad spec using embedded C++

A hardware/firmware project that emulates a LEGO Dimensions Toypad using a Raspberry Pi Pico W (or Pico 2W). It presents itself to a host console as a genuine playpad, and exposes a web interface for managing toys, placing them on the pad, etc.

The firmware lives in firmware/ and is built with PlatformIO.

Basic emulator: common questions

What microcontroller does the Basic emulator use?

The Basic emulator is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Basic emulator PCB?

The Basic emulator measures 47 × 61.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Basic emulator?

19 components, from 7 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Basic emulator design files?

From the FromDarkHell/LegoDimensionsRGB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Basic emulator design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with FromDarkHell. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Basic emulator without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
