About the Macrotype PCB

Macrotype is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by Gnoled5660, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 64.2 × 90.9 mm, with 57 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the NRF52840-QIAA-R, from the Nordic nRF family. Other key parts include the BQ24074RGTR. By type, the board carries 23 capacitors, 11 switches, 11 resistors, 2 ICs, 2 crystals and 2 connectors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, keyboards and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A fully custom wireless macropad.

Using this reference provided by nordic semiconductors, I was able to draw the schematic around the chip.

Macrotype: common questions

What microcontroller does the Macrotype use?

The Macrotype is built around the NRF52840-QIAA-R, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the Macrotype PCB?

The Macrotype measures 64.2 × 90.9 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Macrotype?

57 components, from 32 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Macrotype design files?

From the Gnoled5660/Macrotype repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Macrotype design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Gnoled5660. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Macrotype without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
