About the Doorbell controller PCB

Doorbell controller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by gunnarbeutner, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 64 × 59 mm, with 102 components from 44 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U-N16R8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the SGM2212-3.3, ES8311 and LP5907MFX-3.3/NOPB. By type, the board carries 41 resistors, 23 capacitors, 17 diodes, 6 relays, 4 ICs and 4 switches.

From the project

doorbell.kicadsch / doorbell.kicadpcb are the authoritative source — edit them in KiCad. build.sh never authors copper; it runs the checks KiCad's own DRC/ERC can't express and exports the fab outputs:

tools/doorbelldesign.py holds the placement constants checkpcb.py verifies — connector edge fit/overhang and the mounting-hole MLCC keep-out; the KiCad files are authoritative for the rest. The board is hand-routed in KiCad; route.py fails the build on any unrouted connection or any copper-thieving float island over the sliver limit (≥ 2 mm² or ≥ 10 mm) — fix those in KiCad, never with a tool.

Doorbell controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Doorbell controller use?

The Doorbell controller is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1U-N16R8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Doorbell controller PCB?

The Doorbell controller measures 64 × 59 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Doorbell controller?

102 components, from 44 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Doorbell controller design files?

From the gunnarbeutner/doorbell repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Doorbell controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which gunnarbeutner chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Doorbell controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
