About the HackBoy PCB

HackBoy is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by hariskadayan, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 63.5 × 78.8 mm, with 13 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 6 diodes, 4 switches, 1 IC, 1 connector and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the keyboards, displays & leds and retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

A hackpad (macro pad) shaped like an original Game Boy.

Hack Boy is a hackpad (macropad) designed to look like the original Game Boy. It has 4 keys, a rotary encoder, an OLED display, and RGB underglow. It is based on QMK firmware and is created for the Hack Club Stasis program.

I made this because I always wanted a macropad for my personal use. However, I did not want it to look like a generic box, so I decided to go with the Game Boy design for it to stand out. It was also a good chance for me to practice my KiCad, Fusion 360, and C skills.

HackBoy: common questions

What microcontroller does the HackBoy use?

The HackBoy is built around the XIAO-RP2040-DIP, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the HackBoy PCB?

The HackBoy measures 63.5 × 78.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the HackBoy?

13 components, from 10 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the HackBoy design files?

From the hariskadayan/HackBoy repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the HackBoy design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with hariskadayan. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the HackBoy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
