About the Ice2040 PCB

Ice2040 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by kevinjuszczyk, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 63.5 × 40.6 mm, with 120 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, SRV05-4, W25Q128JVS and iCE40UP-30. By type, the board carries 74 resistors, 24 capacitors, 12 connectors, 5 ICs, 2 switches and 2 diodes.

NOTE: If you haven't soldered BGA packages before, this is not a good one to start with. 1. When the board arrives, check that the RP2040 is functioning correctly by plugging it into the USB port of your PC. A new removable drive should pop up with the volume name of RPI-RP2. 2. Unplug the board. 3. To hand-solder the ICE40, cover the pads of the ICE40 footprint with a thin layer of tacky flux. If too much flux is used, it will boil when heated and dislodge the balls from the package. 4. Smear a thin layer of solder paste on a flat metal surface, and then press the ICE40 into it. Ice2040: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ice2040 use?

The Ice2040 is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Ice2040 PCB?

The Ice2040 measures 63.5 × 40.6 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.5842 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ice2040?

120 components, from 24 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ice2040 design files?

From the kevinjuszczyk/ice2040 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ice2040 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with kevinjuszczyk. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Ice2040 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
