An IOT device built of the raspberry pi

The Room Environment Monitor (REM) project was something that I started back in 2017. I wanted a small IoT device that could tell me if there was a concerning amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO2 in my workshop. I built the first version based on a Raspberry Pi Zero, CCS811 air quality monitor, and a BME280 humidity and temperature sensor.

I went through multiple iterations of the project with the overall objective to reduce cost while increasing the precision of the measurements being made. At that time, the CCS811 sensor cost about 40 dollars alone, which brought the V1 bill…

Room environment monitor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Room environment monitor use?

The Room environment monitor is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Room environment monitor PCB?

The Room environment monitor measures 35.5 × 74.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Room environment monitor?

41 components, from 22 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Room environment monitor design files?

From the kevinlutzer/room-environment-monitor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Room environment monitor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with kevinlutzer. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Room environment monitor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
