About the Pikvm atxboard switch PCB

Pikvm atxboard switch is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by L0czek, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 99.7 × 99.7 mm, with 62 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the CD4066BM, CPC1017N, LD1117S33TR_SOT223 and TXS0108EPW. By type, the board carries 22 resistors, 14 ICs, 14 capacitors, 6 connectors, 2 fuses and 1 switch.

The need for this hardware arose when I bought a PIKVM v4 mini and wanted to control 2 PCs. I really wanted to be able to forward the POWER, RESET buttons and LEDs to the chosen computer for easy control of the target. I looked it up and there already were several solutions which relied on an RP2040 being connected to the PIKVM via USB and exposing the target computer's power and reset via its GPIO. Unfortunately, I couldn't use them in my use case as the PIKVM v4 mini doesn't have a USB port which can be used as a host port. The non-mini version does have this port but is more expensive...

Pikvm atxboard switch: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pikvm atxboard switch use?

The Pikvm atxboard switch is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Pikvm atxboard switch PCB?

The Pikvm atxboard switch measures 99.7 × 99.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pikvm atxboard switch?

62 components, from 19 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pikvm atxboard switch design files?

From the L0czek/pikvm-atxboard-switch repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pikvm atxboard switch design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with L0czek. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pikvm atxboard switch without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
