About the Fantastic node PCB

Fantastic node is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by LJBoxx, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 31.7 × 45 mm, with 21 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the nice_nano, from the Nordic nRF family. Other key parts include the VGDD79S868N0S1, DW01A and CN3163. By type, the board carries 7 capacitors, 4 ICs, 3 connectors, 3 resistors, 1 transistor and 1 antenna.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

meshtastic node designed to be solar powered and small enough to be planted in urban spaces.

I think that mestastic is a great project aiming at making an offgrid network of devices allowing for communication but as part of how it operates, it is limited by the cost and ease of implementing these community ran nodes transmitting packets across a city for instance.

In this repo, you will find a pcb meant to be affordable, with a 3d printable case and easily sourcable parts.

Fantastic node: common questions

What microcontroller does the Fantastic node use?

The Fantastic node is built around the nice_nano, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the Fantastic node PCB?

The Fantastic node measures 31.7 × 45 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Fantastic node?

21 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Fantastic node design files?

From the LJBoxx/fantastic-node repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Fantastic node design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which LJBoxx chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Fantastic node without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
