Bug Wiper Controller for Sailplanes Version 2 with ESP32-S3

The new version of the BugWiper system is a complete redesign of the hardware and software to improve the performance, reliability and features of the system. The new design is based on the ESP32-S3 micro controller. The new design also includes a new motor with higher torque, a self locking gear and a motor encoder to measure the motor position and speed. The new design also includes a new software architecture that allows for more advanced features like programmable cable length, soft direction change of the motor at the wingtip, slow down the motor before reaching the fuselage and logging…

BugWiper2.0 Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the BugWiper2.0 Controller use?

The BugWiper2.0 Controller is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the BugWiper2.0 Controller PCB?

The BugWiper2.0 Controller measures 110 × 40 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the BugWiper2.0 Controller?

95 components, from 42 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the BugWiper2.0 Controller design files?

From the M-Scholli/BugWiper2_0 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the BugWiper2.0 Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which M-Scholli chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the BugWiper2.0 Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
