About the Kaltstahl PCB

Kaltstahl is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by machdyne, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 16 mm, with 39 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q32JVSS, MB85RS16, NCP115 and ESD224DQA. By type, the board carries 20 capacitors, 8 resistors, 5 ICs, 1 crystal, 1 connector and 1 jumper.

Kaltstahl Storage Device

Kaltstahl is a higher capacity version of Blaustahl.

Kaltstahl can use either the Blaustahl (USB-CDC) or Ebenstahl (USB-MSC) firmware.

The default firmware images are available here.

Please see the Blaustahl repo for instructions and firmware source code for the USB-CDC firmware.

To build the firmware from the source code, you will need to modify blaustahl.h and change the FRAM\_SIZE value to 262144 and then use the following commands:

Kaltstahl: common questions

What microcontroller does the Kaltstahl use?

The Kaltstahl is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Kaltstahl PCB?

The Kaltstahl measures 30 × 16 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Kaltstahl?

39 components, from 20 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Kaltstahl design files?

From the machdyne/kaltstahl repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Kaltstahl design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Kaltstahl without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
