About the Rng PCB

Rng is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by mitsake, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. It is a board measuring 54.6 × 72 mm, with 30 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATSAMD21E18A, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the AP2112K-3.3 and ST662A. By type, the board carries 10 capacitors, 6 connectors, 6 resistors, 3 ICs, 3 transistors and 1 switch.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

A hardware random number generator that uses avalanche noise. Based on the Trinket M0.

This is my contribution to the Boldport Club's community run Board Swap Project, a hardware random number generator that uses avalanche noise to make patterns and roll dice. Apart from being part of the community project, my other motivations were interest in randomness and the processes that can be used to generate it, along with the idea of using PCBs to build an enclosure.

Rng: common questions

What microcontroller does the Rng use?

The Rng is built around the ATSAMD21E18A, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Rng PCB?

The Rng measures 54.6 × 72 mm and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Rng?

30 components, from 16 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Rng design files?

From the mitsake/rng-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Rng design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which mitsake chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Rng without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
