About the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam PCB

AbuDhabi ElectronBeam is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by monicaespinosa, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 130 × 145 mm, with 53 components from 31 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Mega2560_R3_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 74LS01, L7805, MAX3232, MAX485ESA_T and 74LS20. By type, the board carries 20 resistors, 10 diodes, 9 capacitors, 8 connectors, 5 ICs and 1 module.

From the project

This is a project done at EST-RUB. Here is the control and interface of a vacuum system using a Pfeiffer turbo pump plus a backing pump

The setup still has to be simulated to find out V_c and to check the accuracy of the voltages selected for the grid and the plate.

Initially were the following voltages set: VS 6.4 V VC: 6.4 V VG= 400 V VP= 1000 V

The result for the obtained trajectory is shown below. The obtained current was around 5 mA.

However, the shape of the electron beams seems to change its shape in a very drastic way. Making the VC smaller (more negative) should help concentring more the electrons to the center of the beam. A second simulation was made sweeping the voltage of the WehneltCylinider between -10 V and…

AbuDhabi ElectronBeam: common questions

What microcontroller does the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam use?

The AbuDhabi ElectronBeam is built around the Arduino_Mega2560_R3_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam PCB?

The AbuDhabi ElectronBeam measures 130 × 145 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam?

53 components, from 31 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam design files?

From the monicaespinosa/ConVacuumSystem repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with monicaespinosa. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the AbuDhabi ElectronBeam without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
